Where did the sound 'shhhhhh' come from as a sound to tell people to be quiet? Does it originate in Hushhhhhhh? Or has our English language got so lazy it's an abbreviation for shhhhhhut up?

Shampoo

Whilst getting ready for work this morning, I couldn't help but wonder, who invented shampoo? What made them think that putting some sort of substance on their hair was a good idea? Was it discovered by accident? Did it start as a joke? I wonder how long it took for it to catch on and become the 'norm' to wash your hair with shampoo! Hmm!

Milking it

Thanks for your answer to the bugbear question Kirsty - I can see that this will be a great forum of education and knowledge sharing for both myself and you and your friends ('hello' to you all!).

Another thought crossed my mind today and has often done so in the past. When and who was it that found out that you can get a nutritious and tasty drink from the hanging udders of a cow? Did someone fall asleep or under one and taste it by accident? Or did someone think 'why don't I squeeze this, see what comes out and then add a bit to my tea'?

A bit too deep for bank holiday Monday

I don't know about you but my head is often full of useless, questions, taking up room in my brain and i felt this might be a solution to answer them. Please feel free to post your answers so I can fill my brain up with other questions, probably just as useless. If you have any questions then please go ahead as well

OK first off - the word 'bugbear' (context - my biggest bugbear is people that don't eat meat). Does this expression derive from something? Like a bear being annoyed by bugs? Or bugs being annoyed with bears?
