Shhhhhh
Where did the sound 'shhhhhh' come from as a sound to tell people to be quiet? Does it originate in Hushhhhhhh? Or has our English language got so lazy it's an abbreviation for shhhhhhut up?

Ha! The thing that makes me laugh aboout "ssshhhh" is that the sound that makes is usually louder than the thing being "ssshhh'd"!
